Super Modified Behmor Coffee Roaster

This is my Super Modified Behmor coffee roaster.
All circuit boards and thermostats have been removed and each component is now directly connected to power and an on/off toggle switch. The 2 main heating elements are now running through a variac with a Kill-A-Watt meter to monitor voltage. The drum motor has been upgraded to a 50rpm motor. A BT bean temp probe and an ET environmental temp. thermocouple have been added and a custom circuit board/ DMM meter giving BT RoR (bean temp. rate of rise)

Bean temp. probe.

I had a slightly larger drum hub made and drilled for the bean temp probe to slide through. It is lined with a teflon tube to avoid wear on the probe.

These are the bean temp. probe feed troughs. The probe tip lines up in the middle of the bean flow through the troughs. The probe is then removed to remove the drum.

****Warning***** These modifications can be hazardous. All built-in safety features are no longer functional. The warranty void. Any modifications should not be considered without a true understanding of what your doing and risks involved. Anything done to a Behmor is at your own risk. Interesting temperature probe placement, might try it myself

Greetings, Ed,

I have always admired your creative approaches! Will your Bean Mass Temperature troughs work with very small batches, such as 1/5 to 1/4 pound?

Thanks again for sharing your ideas with us!

Thanks Robert, I haven't had much time to do more testing. I will try a small batch soon to see how well the readings work. Oh course I have a faster drum motor that does make this form of BT reading work better. I will post some more comments on how my modifications are working out. I also want to better understand chaff movement around the heating elements due to the faster drum motor.

Ed,

Any chance you could provide more details on you BT probe?

Where did you get the larger hub made?

How does the probe thread through? Do you insert the probe (using slack) before inserting in the machine?

Or do you insert the drum and snake in the probe?

How long it took you to do it?
